2010 Georgetown Global Forum Focus Series

Relief and Reconstruction: New Players, Policies and Paradigms

The 2010 Global Forum Focus Series was held on Friday, April 30, 2010, in Washington, DC. More than 300 people participated in two panel discussions and a keynote address exploring the challenges, lessons learned and new models in relief and reconstruction for disaster-stricken and war-torn areas.

The devastation in Haiti and Chile and the ongoing conflict in Afghanistan have focused world attention on how relief organizations manage their operations and how relief transitions to rebuilding. Frequently, relief organizations must join forces with complementary partners to best deliver their services and establish order. In addition, new technology and business models are redefining by whom and how relief efforts are undertaken.

At the forum, distinguished leaders from a dozen different international organizations, the private sector, academia and the U.S. military shared successful strategies for alleviating human suffering and ensuring basic services during times of crisis.
